Milestone Installation at Coed-y-Bleiddiau

After much preparation with PW & JASPER the milestone at Coed-y-Bleiddiau was installed on the evening of Friday 2nd July in a joint operation. Using the very versatile crane, easy work was made of loading the milestone from store at Penrhyn station onto the works train.

The train had to wait at Tan-y-Bwlch to cross the last down passenger train before proceeding to Coed-y-Bleiddiau. The offloading went well using the new straps.

Even the weather was excellent for the long evening ahead as many jobs were tackled. (See latest JASPER report for more details of the activities carried out that evening).

These included:

  • The installation of a slate plaque in memory of the Johnsons on the wall of the cottage at Coed-y-Bleiddiau
  • Retrieval for repair of the stone wall capping blocks for the traditional FR fencing, a project to be completed in the future;
  • Scrap fencing wire removed in large bundles; and
  • Fence repairs carried out.

With no passenger trains to contend with, a full evening’s work could be carried out without interruption, and the train finally returned to Minffordd at 2230.

Thanks are due to all who helped with milestone installation, including the funding which was provided by the Dee & Mersey Group and the FR Heritage Group.

One milestone is still in storage and will be installed at Whistling Curve at a later date.
